BLACK
ROCK
Arguably the best place to immerse yourself in
the Bay of Fundy is Black Rock. Yes the much talked
of Black Rock . The Black Rock of swim-throughs
, of fabled cannons , and mysterious endless anchor
chains. When diving Black Rock once is definitely
not enough.
The swift nourishing tidal flow that sweeps the
rock makes sure that the marine life of the bay
is abundant. Gardens of anemones like landscaped
flower beds slope into the distance. A huge tufted
orange ball looms on the edge of visibility materializing
as a boulder of feeding soft corals. Those same
currents bring swarms of plankton, which are sometimes
followed by schools of fish, and on one lucky
day a whale.
One of the great shots in any scuba magazine is
the one of the diver framed by the swim-through.
Black Rock may not have tropical visibility but
swim-throughs it has. Over the years one has shrunk
due to the prolific marine growth but a dedicated
circumnavigation of the rock will produce others.
They may be short but they still have that adventurous
mystique about them.
That's Black Rock in a periwinkle shell. After
many dives here I've found swim-throughs and seen
cannons ( now gone ) , had run ins with wolf fish
and lobster , watched whales and seen white sided
dolphins. Maybe Black Rock is the best all around
dive site in the bay. Check it out and decide
for your self.
Enjoy diving ,
p.s.
Those strong currents at Black Rock have been
known to prompt a certain divemaster , who shall
remain nameless , to utter the infamous phrase,
" jump and swim like hell ! ". A future
story perhaps.
