CASCO
ISLAND - SUPER DRIFT DIVE , SUPER DAY
I f you're lucky enough to be drifting on Head
Harbour Passage on a hot August day you will see
boats of all descriptions littered upon the water.
They are there for myriad reasons : the fishing
, the whales , or like me, the diving. Where the
submarine power cable crosses to Campobello and
just off a small ledge in front of Casco Island
you will find a super drift diving location.
This place has a lot to offer. There are great
bottom structures with deep crevices and steep
walls crammed with invertebrate life. Photographers
can go macro or wide angle. The tidal current
runs more or less parallel to the walls giving
the diver a train window's view of the sights.
And what sights! Huge basket stars, northern red
anemones , and what's this? A submarine power
cable tracking off into the distance. T he current
here is powerful so take a dive flag and an observant
boat operator.
Top side in this area can provide some excitement
of it's own. As I was chasing schools of fish
around the water column, the boat crew were watching
a Fin whale chasing those same fish. After a great
dive a little fishing can fill that surface interval.
So, Casco Island , tough to get to but well the
effort. Maybe the next hot August day you'll think
about giving it a try.
Enjoy diving.
