MYSTERY
AND BEAUTY AT SPRUCE ISLAND
There are so many great dive sites here in the
lower Bay of Fundy that it would take many divers
writing many articles to cover them all. I'm a
big fan of the bay and I hope that by describing
some of these great dives sites others will become
fans as well.
Spruce Island offers a variety of dive options.
For the wreck diver there is the mystery of the
grindstones. Stacked one upon the other like a
line of toppled dominoes , the grindstones can
be found at the eastern tip of the island. The
grindstones start showing up as shallow as 25
feet at low tide and as far as I know the ship
that carried them has yet to be found. The opposite
end of the island is swept by strong current when
the tide is running. The wall here is covered
in invertebrate life making it ideal for the photographer.
Divers must use good judgment here as depths can
exceed 100 feet at high tide. In between these
two sites is a continuos wall with crevices and
cracks that seem like caves.
Spruce Island is a great dive for so many reasons.
Access is by boat and summer's calm weather is
best. Topside there is always the chance of seeing
whales and sea birds so you might want to bring
a non diving friend on this one. Hope you can
check it out.
Enjoy diving
